Jonathan Toews confirmed on Sunday that his chronic immune response syndrome has resurfaced, which has kept him from the Blackhawks lineup since January 28.

Toews' illness kept him out of the lineup for the entire 2021-22 season. An unrestricted free agent after this season, Captain Serious and his career in the NHL are in jeopardy if these problems persist.

Statement from Toews:

"First of all, thank you to the fans and all those who have shown concern about
my absence. I'm still dealing with the symptoms of Long COVID and Chronic
Immune Response Syndrome.

It has been really challenging to play through these symptoms. In the last few weeks, it has reached the point where I had no choice but to step back and concentrate on getting healthy. l am thankful for the patience and support of my teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire Blackhawks organization."

After trade rumors around Toews all season long, it now remains supremely unlikely - a near certainty - that the Hawks' captain is staying in Chicago. His announcement has many folks wondering what happens next; retirement seems an unfortunate likelihood, but you never know.

For now, all we can do is hope that the 3x Stanley Cup champion gets healthy. The hockey business can wait.
