On February 8th, Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson was struck by a car in Detroit while operating an electric scooter. The Swedish blue-liner missed the following three games (1-1-1) before returning in Thursday's 5-2 defeat to the Red Wings.

Andersson avoided catastrophe but did not walk away unscathed. Per Andersson's recollection, he was knocked out for a period after the accident but sustained only minor injuries.

"It was a tough couple days there, especially because I don't really know what happened still,» Andersson said. «You're on your way to one place and you wake up in an ambulance. It's obviously scary and traumatic and all that kind of stuff. I'm just thankful for the Detroit hospital. They did a really good job.

«I was in an MRI machine before I could even say what my name was. I'm grateful for everyone who works at the Detroit hospital. It was traumatic, for me, my wife, my family, and everyone."

Andersson said he was cleared by doctors to play on Wednesday but opted to take an extra day of rest before returning. GM Brad Treliving commented too, saying the team's medical staff is in consultation with the hospital staff for Andersson's recovery.

"Honestly, I'm just lucky to be alive."

This is the type of incident that can give someone a new lease on life. Andersson and his wife - Tessa - birthed a baby boy in August, so thankfully he is alright after a scary incident.

The Flames made out fortunately as well, as they have a gauntlet of a schedule the next couple of weeks. Calgary plays 8 games in 15 nights, including tilts against the New York Rangers, Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

They are fortunate to have Andersson - who leads their team in ice-time - back healthy for this upcoming run.
