The divisive issue of LGBTQ+ Pride events in the NHL can't be ignored. Whether or not Ivan Provorov was aware of the chain reaction that would follow when he opted out of the Flyers' scheduled event is uncertain; unlikely in all reality.

But a storm followed nevertheless.

Since then, the New York Rangers - and shortly after, the Islanders - opted out of donning their scripted 'Pride' jerseys for their respective events, further exacerbating the issue at hand.

To some, this is purely a 'freedom of expression' issue, which is fair. To others, what is the big deal with donning rainbow-colored jerseys and tape? Seems harmless enough, which is also fair. So where do we draw the line?

Longtime NHL executive and sitting President for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Brian Burke, was asked about his stance. For those who aren't privy, Burke's late son - Brendan - came out as gay in his early adult life but was tragically killed in a car accident.

Since, the outspoken executive has been a beacon of strength in the LGBTQ+ community and a respected liaison to the hockey community. If anyone in the sport is qualified to speak on the subject, it's Burkie.

Enjoy the Patrick Marleau content before the subject matter at hand.

Burke makes an eloquent point. No one who wears rainbow-themed garb is etching their name in stone as a member of the community. While the entire theme of 'Pride Nights' could be considered pandering, it ultimately yields a positive atmosphere for a generally underrepresented community.

Does that mean clubs should mandate that their players participate? Not necessarily. However, the court of public opinion - as always - is another beast altogether.

Another issue for the NHL to solve...
