The Los Angeles Kings announced on Wednesday they have signed defenseman Mikey Anderson to a max-term contract. Eight years, $33 million; $4.125 per season.

Anderson, 23, has just 33 points in 172 games for the Kings, so this deal carries some risk in the productivity department. Nevertheless, Anderson has posted brilliant defensive metrics in a difficult role with the Kings.

According to Natural StatTrick, Anderson is 2nd in total ice time behind only Drew Doughty. L.A. owns a +5 goal-differential at 5v5 while Anderson is on the ice and a +31 differential in scoring chances-for versus against.

He might not light up the scoresheet, but aged just 23, Anderson is the type of defenseman every team needs at least one of, and the Kings have him signed at an attractive cap hit for the next 8 seasons.
