If you've been watching hockey for any length of time, you've likely seen some devastating hits happen on the ice. Very few require the removal of an organ afterwards, though. That is the case for 23-year-old Yegor Stronov, who was involved in a collision with an opponent on February 11th.

Stronov, a defender with Dynamo-Altay of the VHL, had to have one of his kidneys removed following the hit on the ice during a game against CSKA.

"The examination revealed damage to the left kidney. During the surgery the doctors failed to save the organ, so unfortunately the kidney had to be removed," said his team in a news release.

"We would like to express our deepest words of support to relatives and friends of Yegor!"

The news release states Stronov is currently in serious, but stable condition. He's expected to make a full recovery.
