Yes. Some NHL players still rip cigarettes in between periods.

Allegedly.
Minnesota Wild correspondent for The Athletic, Michael Russo, recently conducted a player poll about all the ranging routines NHL players have during period intermissions.
It was revealed that - unsurprisingly - some NHL players have insanely weird habits in between periods. Some guys strip down and soak in a cold tub. Some take showers. Some guys take cat naps. Others drink Coca-Cola (Ovechkin).
Marcus Foligno of the Minnesota Wild joked about how guys "used to" smoke cigarettes in between periods. Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn, however, had a different take.
When asked, Benn said: "Some guys still do it (smoke cigarettes) now. I can't tell you who, but yeah, they do."

Given all the science around nutrition and its effects on the body that we have available in 2023, the allegation that some players rip cigarettes at all, let alone during games, seems absolutely bizarre. Then again, if one is in incredible athletic shape, perhaps they can afford it?
I'm not a doctor, but that has to be ill-advised. One has to imagine there is not a single NHL club that would condone such behavior. Well, unless the player(s) in question are habitually posting star-level production.
All the same, what a crazy statement in today's NHL.
