It's been known for a couple of weeks now that the National Hockey League will be returning to Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton next season to mark the 20th anniversary of the first-ever Heritage Classic.

What was unclear was who the Edmonton Oilers would be playing against as it could have been one of two teams, their provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames, or their opponent from the 2003 Heritage Classic, the Montreal Canadiens. It sounds like it'll be the former rather than the latter, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
During Saturday's edition of '32 Thoughts' on Hockey Night in Canada, Friedman mentioned that the Edmonton Oilers will be facing off against the Calgary Flames, marking the first time that the 'Battle of Alberta' will head outdoors.
Friedman added that, while there isn't a set date in mind as of yet, it appears that that game will likely be held in October 2023. It would have been cool to see the NHL hold the game on the exact same day as they did 20 years ago, which was November 22, but if the 2003 edition of the Heritage Classic was any indication, it gets extremely cold in Edmonton at that time of year.
The NHL has conducted the Heritage Classic a total of six times, with Calgary and Edmonton making the most appearances thus far at three a piece.
