When the Flyers traded for Ryan Ellis, many folks believed that he was the #2 defenseman Philadelphia needed to make them a contender. In hindsight, that obviously has not happened.

Ellis' injury kept him from all but 4 games for the Flyers, now missing over a full year of active duty. GM Chuck Fletcher confirmed on Thursday that Ellis won't play again this season, calling it a bonus if he does. Hardly a display of confidence.

The Flyers' hopes for any imminent success are low; very low. Many fans question whether or not Fletcher is the man for the job. Looking around the NHL, it is hard to blame them.

Seeing what Kent Hughes is doing in Montreal and what Tom Fitzgerald has done in New Jersey, who can realistically look at Chuck Fletcher's résumé in Philly with confidence? His trades have hardly panned out - perhaps with the exception of Owen Tippett, the Flyers' drafting has not been great, and they are right up against both the salary cap and the contract limit.

Ipso facto, their options for retooling/rebuilding are severely limited. Is it time for the Flyers' ownership to intervene and replace key front office figures?
