Darryl Sutter rarely offers praise, and he never hands it out unless it's earned. With the Montréal Canadiens visiting Calgary on Thursday night, Sutter was asked about Monahan and how he reflects on their short time together with the Flames.

Sutter said that he never had the opportunity to see Monahan at his best, given that he had back-to-back hip surgeries when Sutter arrived in Calgary. The Flames' bench boss said that, had Monahan been signed long-term, he could have been the captain of the Flames, and that he is well-suited for the role.

Monahan's return to action bred wide skepticism as to whether or not he would be able return to form after rehabilitating two separate hip surgeries. Those skepticisms have yielded negative results, as Monahan's time in Montreal has exceeded expectations.

In 22 games for the Habs, Monahan has netted 14 points, putting him on a 53-point pace. And he is scoring at such a pace with less than 12:00 TOI on average.

Given his leadership qualities and depth scoring abilities, his acquisition could prove to be yet another savvy move from the duo of Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
