After being on the sidelines since October 18th, the Winnipeg Jets had said very little about what was keeping Nikolaj Ehlers out of the lineup. The 26-year-old, one of the team's top players, has suited up for just two games in 2022-23, notching three assists. The Jets have now finally provided an update.

According to head coach Rick Bowness, Ehlers will undergo surgery for a sports hernia next week. There is no timeline for his return right now, although Bowness said he expects Ehlers will play at some point this season. Bowness told reporters that Ehlers pulled himself from the game against Dallas on October 17th as "something didn't feel right".
This is a big loss for the Jets, who have surprisingly looked good so far. The team is 10-4-1 in 15 games, and sits in fourth place in the Western Conference. Ehlers had 28 goals and 55 points in 62 games last season.
