It was a shock to many over the weekend when Brennan Othmann, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NHL entry draft, was traded by the Flint Firebirds of the OHL. Othmann was the Firebirds' captain, and had piled up 24 points (11G, 13A) in 16 games so far this season. The property of the New York Rangers has released a lengthy statement on Twitter, and it sounds as if health issues with family members may have had something to do with the exchange.

"I have two grandparents that are struggling with health issues and being closer to home to be w/my family is what makes sense to me at the moment. I hope fans can understand that."

Othmann, a native of Scarborough, was serving a two-game suspension when the trade was completed. He's anxious to get going with his new team, the Peterborough Petes.

"As I woke up a Petes, while still at my amazing billet home (I will miss u), I have a game this afternoon in Sag (Saginaw). I am thrilled & excited to start this new chapter. I hope I can make the fans as proud of me as I am to say I am a Petes"

"I am extremely thankful for all of your positive messages and posts. I am joining a team / org full of history, passion and class. Thank you Peterborough for the warm welcome!! GO PETES GO!!!"

Othman, 19, was at the Rangers' training camp before the 2022-23 season started. However, the decision was made to have his continue his development in the Ontario Hockey League, something many fans seemed to agree with. There's no telling yet whether his success in Juniors will translate to the NHL, but he's looking very good so far.
