The Boston Bruins have a major situation on their hands with regards to David Pastrnak. After this season, Pastrnak is an unrestricted free agent. Other notable UFAs include Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Pavel Zacha, and Connor Clifton. They are nearing a precipice with their star players aging out and not enough developed draft picks to supplement. As it were, their window to win is still very much open. For now.

David Pastrnak is one of the most underpaid players in the NHL and will command a large contract this time around. And with each passing day, his stock is getting more and more expensive. So far tonight, he has a goal and an assist, and is currently tied with Artemi Panarin for the league lead in points, with time to go in the third.
The latest reports say that the two sides have open dialogue, but nothing is imminent in terms of contract discussions. Reasonably, Pastrnak's camp is happy to let him tear it up this season and drive that value through the roof. For Boston, they run the risk of losing him for nothing if they can't reach a deal by summer.
To add to the Bruins' decision, they have the makings to take a real run at the Stanley Cup this season, so a trade deadline move seems unlikely. Unless their season falls off the rails, but I don't see that happening.

Admittedly, I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to statistics. But 99th percentile seems pretty good.
All in all, Boston will have about $30 million to spend next summer, but as of today they have 11 expiring contracts on their active roster. They might be able to afford Pastrnak's next deal, but there is also a considerable chance that they will not be able to.
