The New York Islanders have signed forward Mat Barzal to an eight-year, $73.2 million contract ($9.15M AAV):

Mat Barzal just earned a huge payday, and critics are split on whether or not this is a smart bet by GM Lou Lamoriello.

On one hand, Barzal has not scored more than 62 points since 2017-18 and has holes in his game. Although Barzal possesses incredible skill, he is not overly difficult for other teams to neutralize and does have a tendency to cheat offensively, leaving his team open to counterattacks. This deal could be an overpay.

Meanwhile, on the other, Barzal is an amazing offensive weapon and could be due for an offensive explosion. With the departure of Barry Trotz, the Isles' system could seriously open up for him, enabling him to score a lot more. Thus, making his deal a brilliant one for the Islanders, especially if the salary cap grows to $92 million by 2025.

Still under contract through the upcoming season, Barzal's new deal kicks in at the start of '23-24. Currently -- per CapFriendly -- the Islanders have all but five players signed through next season, with a projected $71.375 allocated.

After missing the playoffs a season ago, the Islanders -- under new coach Lane Lambert -- look to right the ship and reinstate themselves as a powerhouse in the east.
