Zach Senyshyn, whose short professional hockey career so far carries an interesting backstory, has signed a professional tryout contract (PTO) for training camp, which set to open in a few days. Senyshyn will be attending camp with the New Jersey Devils, hoping for some sort of deal before the PTO ends.

Senyshyn's interesting back story starts at the 2015 NHL draft. Ranked 38th with the league's Central Scouting Bureau, Senychyn would end up going 15th overall in a surprise move by the Boston Bruins. With the very next pick, the New York Islanders chose Mat Barzal. It was a mistake that Boston GM Don Sweeney has never been able to live down. Senychyn, 25, has managed just 16 games in the NHL since being drafted. Barzal, on the other hand, has 311 points in 362 NHL games and is considered one of the better players in the league.

Senychyn requested a trade from the Bruins in December of 2021, citing his lack of playing time in the NHL as one of the reasons. He was shipped to the Ottawa Senators in March of this year, and played two games with the Sens after that. He spent the rest of his time in the AHL. He became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
