Louis Domingue's debut New York Rangers mask has been released by the artist -- Sylvie Marsolais -- and there is something beautifully off-putting about it. Take a look:

What is so 'wrong' about it?

If you recall, Louis Domingue was thrust into a starting position during the Rangers' playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Domingue nearly stole the show. This is not the first, nor will it be the last example of a team struggling against a particular player who they later acquire. It really does happen all the time. Goaltender Glenn Healy going from the New York Islanders to the Rangers via free agency is a classic example.

In his seven games against the Rangers, Domingue posted a 3.65 GAA and a .898 SV%, which in a vacuum are sub-replacement level. The fact remains though, that the Rangers had pretty much every bounce go their way in that series (both of Pittsburgh's starting goalies, Sidney Crosby, and basically half of their defense falling to injury, to name a few), yet they had real difficulty closing out their opponent. Domingue was central in that, so the Rangers felt that he -- together with Jaroslav Halak -- could help mitigate the loss of Alexandar Georgiev.

Back to the helmet, the mask itself is a piece of art; but there is something about it that just seems...I don't know, just wrong. Either like the match doesn't belong after watching their playoff series, or it is just destined not to work out. This is just one of those gut-feelings. Great mask, though.
