The Boston Bruins' window to contend is quickly closing, as the contracts of David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, and several others all expire after this season. The Bruins only have five forwards signed after the upcoming season, and rumor has it David Pastrnak is one guy who is not willing to sign right now.

Joe Haggerty of Boston Hockey Now reports that Pastrnak is taking a 'wait and see' approach to negotiations, citing the team's uncertain direction. Boston is also infamous for refusing to sign huge tickets, although they made an exception with Charlie McAvoy, the team's highest paid player at $9.5 million per season. Haggerty suggests Pastrnak could be a $10 million per year player, so all things considered it could be a long-shot that the Czech forward remains a Bruin for more than a year.

If Pastrnak is unwilling to re-up with the Bruins, the team will be forced to hit the reset button, but they would likely be well-equipped for an instant one, much like Calgary's this summer. As of today, Boston has only $58 million committed beyond '22-23, giving them roughly $25 million to reconstruct their offense. These days, it is tough to do that without a strong prospect pipeline, and Hockey Prospecting ranks Boston's 32nd in the NHL.

That 2015 Entry Draft looks worse and worse each year and could be Sweeney's impending downfall. The Bruins' last dance could very well be in 2022-23, so enjoy it while it lasts. We could see a much different group in 2023-24.
