Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman just broke the news that Shane Doan is stepping back from his role in the hockey operations department of the Arizona Coyotes organization. Doan is the franchise leader in pretty much everything, and he has held one role or another -- player, staff, or otherwise -- with the organization since he was drafted in 1995.

Doan told Friedman, "I don't want this to be seen in any way that hurts the organization. I want the arena bid to be successful for hockey's long-term future in the Valley.»

The reasons for Doan's decision are unclear, but one has to factor in his family as well as other personal reasons as the primary reason. Married with four children -- the eldest of whom was drafted 37th overall by the Coyotes last summer -- Shane Doan can now spend added time with his kids and have a more active presence in their lives.

It is worth noting that the organization is at an all-time low, playing in a college arena for at least the next two seasons, so a fair bit of speculation could be made as to a cause-effect relationship with Doan's news. Still, Doan maintains that this decision in no way mirrors his feelings towards the organization or current head coach André Tourigny.

It is presumed that Doan will eventually re-join the organization on his usual basis, but for now he will only retain his informal role with the organization. The Coyotes will play their home opener on October 28 against the Winnipeg Jets.
