Agent Lewis Gross spoke with Sportsnet recently, indicating that the Toronto Maple Leafs have serious progress to make in re-signing burgeoning young defenseman Rasmus Sandin, and it is making fans exceedingly anxious over the possibility of an offer-sheet.

Gross told SN's Luke Fox, 'negotiations are going nowhere.' Neither side specified why a deal has yet to be struck, but it doesn't take a genius to figure it out:

Sandin, a restricted free agent, is the last order of business for GM Kyle Dubas to sort out and is proving to be maybe his most difficult affair of the summer. In 88 games with the Leafs, the Swede has scored 28 points (.31 points/game) and set career highs in games played (51), points (16), and time-on-ice per game (16:58) in 2021-22. Kyle Dubas spoke on the situation:

"Negotiating contracts via the media (has) an adverse impact on player (and) team reputation and traditionally (does) not create resolutions to private matters."

With a dearth of depth on their left defensive side--Morgan Reilly, Jake Muzzin, and Mark Giordano--Sandin's place on the roster sits up in the air. Toronto's 2018 29th overall pick sports a strong résumé out of junior and the AHL, and he has earned a full-time NHL role but at what price?

Reasonably speaking, Sandin's play has been quite strong for Toronto, and considering his age, Sandin is a player all 32 NHL clubs would take. Given his contract status and Toronto's salary position, I am shocked no one has submitted an offer sheet yet.

As an RFA, Sandin can sign a deal from another team, and if they elect, Toronto can accept draft picks commensurate to the amount of money for which Sandin signs. Given their lack of operating space, I expect someone to apply the heat to Dubas and submit Sandin an offer sheet. If Dubas would rather get proactive, he could trade his former first-round pick for a player who can help them win now.

Either way, the Leafs have much work to do in determining Sandin's future in Toronto. Be it via trade or an offer sheet, there is a significant chance Sandin plays elsewhere in 2022-23.
