Quarter-final Wednesday at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship got underway early at 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. Edmonton time with a clash between Finland and Germany.

Finland came into today's game as the second place team in Group A with a 2-1-0-1 record through four preliminary round games. Meanwhile, Germany is the third seed in Group B, coming into the game with a 2-0-0-2 record in the preliminary round.

The Finns opened the scoring less than four minutes into the opening frame on a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal. Joel Maatta passed it to Roby Jarventie, who gave it to Kasper Simontaival. Simontaival gave it back to Jarventie, who fired a quick pass back to the Los Angeles Kings prospect and he put it past Florian Bugl to make it 1-0 Finland.

Finland extended their lead on the power play shortly after the half-way mark of the first period. After working it around, Kasper Puutio whiffed on the puck but it made its way to the front of the net where Kasper Simontaival picks up the rebound and slides it over to captain Roni Hirvonen who put it home to make it 2-0 Finland.

Germany got one back on the power play a few minutes later. Forward Bennet Rossmy picked up the rebound and jammed it in past netminder Leevi Merilainen to cut Finland's lead to one.

After a bad slashing penalty by Alexander Blank in the offensive zone, Finland headed back to the power play. Ottawa Senators prospect Roby Jarventie had the puck and cut into the middle at the top of the circle and fired a shot far side, top corner on Bugl to restore Finland's two-goal lead making it 3-1.

There wasn't a whole lot of action during the second period until just under three minutes remaining. Bennet Rossmy scored his second of the game by making a great move in tight to roof the puck on his backhand over the shoulder of Merilainen.

Finland's lethal power play struck again in the third period. Roby Jarventie ripped a shot past Bugl for his second of the game to give Finland their third two-goal lead of the game.

For the fourth time in the game, Finland netted a power play goal, this time it was Joel Maatta. Maatta had the puck in tight at the side of Germany's net and managed to pull the puck to his forehand and put it past Bugl to make it 5-2 Finland.

Finland held off a late German power play to take the game by a score of 5-2 and will now advance to the semi-final. They will find out their opponent for Friday's semi-final at the conclusion of the US-Czechia game tonight as the IIHF re-seeds the teams after the quarter-final round.
