The Columbus Blue Jackets announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have signed forward Emil Bemstrom to a two-year, $1.8 million contract extension that will carry an average annual value of $900,000.

Bemstrom, 23, is coming off of a 2021-22 campaign in which he recorded six goals and 11 points in 41 outings while averaging 10:31 minutes in ice time per game. The 2017 fourth-round selection (117 overall) has played in a total of 117 career NHL games, scoring 19 goals and 36 points. He has also suited up in an additional five playoff contests but has been held off the board entirely.

«Emil is a skilled and offensive forward who has the ability to find the back of the net with an accurate shot,» said general manager Jarmo Kekalainen. «He is young and still developing but we believe he has a lot of potential to become an important part of our organization over the next few seasons.»

With the signing, the Blue Jackets now sit $1.8 million over the maximum salary cap which means Kekalainen will need to do some tinkering with his roster before the 2022-23 campaign begins. Nevertheless, he has now gotten all of his restricted free agents under contract, and is likely done in terms of adding any more players to his roster this summer.
