One problem GMs face is that when they sign a player & shortly after that player requires surgery, they have to foot the bill. Well technically, the team's insurance does anyway, but still it can't be a fun experience when a GM signs a player & that player all of a sudden requires surgery.

Mark Pysyk, recently signed by the Detroit Red Wings, will miss the next 4-6 months after undergoing successful surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon, per a team release:

The 10-season NHL veteran, currently on his fourth team, is considered a high-end bottom-pairing defenseman with great underlying statistics. He doesn't produce a ton offensively, only managing 104 points in 521 NHL games. More importantly, however, he does not allow a ton of goals & his team tends to out-chance the opposition with him on the ice, which is about as good as it gets for a defensive defenseman:

The timeline for Pysyk's return has him back in action around Christmas-time, which is too bad for the Red Wings. Detroit is looking to take the next step, and they are not exactly the deepest team on defense. Pysyk was a quietly good signing for GM Steve Yzerman, securing his services for one-year at an $850,000 cap hit. But Pysyk will have to wait to make his winged-wheel debut.
