After Friday night's Blockbuster™ trade between the Calgary Flames and the Florida Panthers, Calgary is already receiving calls on newly acquired F Jonathan Huberdeau. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that other teams, Huberdeau's expiring contract in mind, have wondered if Calgary will simply flip the 100-point scorer. As opposed to doing that whole 'contract' thing a year from now.

Calgary recently had Johnny Gaudreau leave ~$15 million to not play for them. Then Matthew Tkachuk told the Flames straight-up that he will not sign a long-term deal. Now Huberdeau (and Weegar) will both need contracts at the end of the 2022-23 season, and both will command significant raises.

Pagnotta also reports that Huberdeau was expecting the Panthers to reach out & discuss a contract extension, but they never did. And the rest is history. Flames GM Brad Treliving earned a considerable haul for Matthew Tkachuk, all things considered. But the most important thing he earned himself is time; a whole year to sign Jonathan Huberdeau & Mackenzie Weegar. Or, at the very least, trade them for someone else who won't sign in Calgary.
