After a short saga, Matthew Tkachuk has finally been traded. Of all the teams reportedly in the running, the Florida Panthers were a dark horse. While they were on his reported 'short-list' of teams, the Panthers were $3 million over the NHL's salary cap. However, Florida GM Bill Zito dropped an absolute NUKE on a quiet Friday night when he sent star F Jonathan Huberdeau & D Mackenzie Weegar to Calgary in return.

Full trade:

To FLA:
Matthew Tkachuk
2024 4th Round Pick (conditional)

To CGY:
Jonathan Huberdeau
Mackenzie Weegar
Cole Schwindt
2025 1st Round Pick (Lottery Protected)

Talk about a landscape-changing trade, my oh my. GM Bill Zito saw last postseason's collapse for his team & decided to shake it to its core. Huberdeau was an MVP candidate the past two seasons & Weegar an excellent two-way defenseman. But Weegar's series-clinching blunder surely had something to do with his departure, and Huberdeau is going to collect a king's ransom when his contract expires after the 2022-23 season.

Speaking of large sums of money, the Florida Panthers also signed Matthew Tkachuk to an eight-year, $76 million ($9.5M AAV) extension, making Tkachuck the third-highest paid Panther behind Aleksander Barkov & Sergei Bobrovsky.

This is one of the biggest trades in memory, and it has been a long time since we had a trade like this. A true-to-form Blockbuster--capital B--Blockbuster Trade. Gotta love it. Brady Tkachuk sure is loving it:

With Matthew Tkachuk finally being traded, all eyes are on Nazem Kadri & where he ends up.
