The Canadian government is freezing millions of dollars in funding for Hockey Canada until the organization signs up with an independent federal agency that has the power to investigate and impose sanctions for inappropriate behavior. Furthermore, Hockey Canada must disclose recommendations received from a Toronto based law firm hired to investigate the sexual abuse allegations.

This ruling comes just two days after a deeper investigation into a woman's allegations of sexual abuse against members of the 2018 Canadian world junior team where Hockey Canada president Scott Smith and chief executive Tom Renney testified.

Sport Minister Pascale St-Onge: «This is about changing a deeply entrenched culture, it's not about simple Band-Aid solutions... I am going to use all the tools at my disposal to make sure that people are held accountable for what's happening in hockey.»

St-Onge went on to say that Hockey Canada's funding would not be restored until the organization becomes a signatory to the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS). Hockey Canada would then relinquish control of abuse allegations to Sarah-Eve Pelletier (the brand new Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner).

A Hockey Canada representative declined a request for comment.
