During his media availability on Tuesday at the NHL's Scouting Combine, Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes discussed a number of topics including the status of star goaltender Carey Price.

According to Sportsnet's Eric Engels, Hughes said that Price met with specialists in Pittsburgh after Montreal's season came to an end, but there isn't much clarity on whether or not he can play next season.

Hughes added that they should know by July 13th, the opening of free agency, if the 34-year-old is able to play in the fall.

It was a rough season for Price to say the least. He underwent knee surgery last summer following the Stanley Cup Final and was rehabbing that until the team announced Price was entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program for substance abuse.

Price exited the program in November after one month and began working his way back towards a return to the crease, but had to restart his rehab on his knee after the Canadiens shut down their team facilities in December for a league-wide COVID-19 break.

The Anahim Lake (British Columbia) native ultimately made his return on April 15th against the New York Islanders. Price finished the season with a 1-4-0 record in five games.

If Price is unable to return to the Canadiens next season, General Manager Kent Hughes will more than likely scour the free agent market when it opens on July 13th. Jake Allen had his fair share of injury issues during the year, so it may be a good idea to get someone who can at least split the starts next season with him.

Here are a few options Hughes has to work with, if he goes the free agent route:

- Ville Husso (27 y/o, 40 GP: 25-7-6 record w/ St. Louis)
- David Rittich (29 y/o, 17 GP: 6-3-4 record w/ Nashville)
- Kevin Lankinen (27 y/o, 32 GP: 8-15-6 record w/ Chicago)
