The New York Rangers acquired forward Andrew Copp from the Winnipeg Jets at the trade deadline. The Rangers received upcoming unrestricted free agent Copp and a 2023 6th round pick in exchange for Morgan Barron, 2022 2nd round pick*, 2022 2nd round pick (from STL) or 2023 2nd round pick.

The 2022 2nd round pick is conditional on the Rangers making the Eastern Conference Final and Copp playing at least 50% of the Rangers playoff games. These conditions have been met following the Rangers Game 7 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. The 2022 2nd round pick will now become a 1st round pick.

Furthermore, the Jets are permitted to choose if they want the Rangers 2022 2nd round pick (from STL) or the Rangers own 2023 2nd round pick.

Both 2022 picks will be late in each round due to the relative success of St. Louis and New York this season. The 2023 pick is to be determined based on how the Rangers perform next season. It'll be interesting to see which approach the Jets choose with their draft picks.

This was quite a haul for Andrew Copp, especially on an expiring deal. The Rangers and Copp have expressed interest in resigning. If the Rangers do not resign him, they gave up multiple picks for a rental piece.

It will not matter how much they gave up if the Rangers can make the Final and/or win the Stanley Cup. Thus far, Copp has been a contributor in the playoffs for the Blueshirts. In 14 games played, Copp has 6 goals and 6 assists for 12 points. He has points in all situations - 5 on 5, powerplay, and shorthanded. Finally, Copp has mentioned on many occasions how much he loves playing in New York.

As with all trades, this one will be looked at years from now and re-examined with hindsight.
