In his report, Klaus Zaugg said he spoke with the Director of HC Lugano, who told him they are indeed looking for a European goaltender for next season and expects to make an announcement in three weeks or so.
It's been a rough ride for Koskinen throughout his entire playing career. Originally drafted by the New York Islanders, Koskinen came to North America initially in 2009, but found himself playing in the AHL and ECHL. He moved back to Europe, and after a few seasons in his home country of Finland, he moved to the KHL where he really started to get noticed. He put up some really good numbers with SKA Saint Petersburg, winning two Gagarin Cups, before signing with Edmonton. In 2018, Edmonton signed him to a one-year deal, and he had a very solid year. He received another one-year deal for the next season, put up another solid year, and then signed a three-year deal worth $13.5 million. That's where it started to go down hill. For the last two seasons, Koskinen has been mostly relegated to the backup role behind Mike Smith. It's doubtful he gets an offer from any NHL teams when free agency begins, so a contract in Europe makes a lot of sense for the 33-year-old.
