The 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship is right around the corner and is set to be hosted by Helsinki and Tampere (Finland).

We now know who will lead Canada behind the bench as they look to defend their gold medal after defeated Finland in overtime in 2021.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, long-time NHL head coach and Canada coach for the 2022 Winter Olympics, Claude Julien, will be the bench boss for next month's tournament. TSN's Claire Hanna adds that Ottawa Senators head coach DJ Smith will be named an assistant on Julien's staff.

"Claude Julien will be named head coach. Further to @clahanna reporting." Dreger said.

Hanna mentioned, "Hearing that #Sens HC DJ Smith will be named one of Canada's assistant coaches for the IIHF Men's World Championship in Finland"

Additionally, per Pierre LeBrun newly appointed NHL Head Coach Andre Tourigny of the Arizona Coyotes will join Team Canada's coaching staff. This seems like a bit of the Old Guard taking New Wave coaches under Julien's wing for Hockey Canada.

Canada will open up their gold medal defence on Friday, May 13th at 1:20 p.m. ET against Germany, who finished fourth at last year's tournament.
