Over two years ago, Toronto Marlies Zamboni driver David Ayres achieved fame after he came into a National Hockey League game for the Carolina Hurricanes, because both of their goaltenders, James Reimer and Petr Mrazek, got injured.

Not only did Ayres play half of the game, he made eight saves and earned the victory for the Hurricanes over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.

In the days following that game, Ayres was invited down to Raleigh to sound the siren at the start of Carolina's game, was named an honourary citizen by Governor Roy Cooper, and had a day declared in his honour.

Flash forward to 2022, and there hasn't been a whole lot of news surrounding Ayres and what he's been up to, until today.

According to Sara Civian of The Athletic, David Ayres is going to be named head coach of the Vermilion County Bobcats of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

After doing a bit of research, it doesn't appear that Ayres has any coaching experience so this is a bit of a puzzling move. The Vermilion County Bobcats are in their first year in the SPHL and sit dead last, so it's possible this could be a bit of a publicity stunt in order for more people to pay attention to the team.
