Yesterday, the Montreal Canadiens placed veteran forward Mathieu Perreault on waivers and this afternoon the 34-year-old cleared.

As it stands, there hasn't been a decision on whether or not Perreault will be assigned to the Laval Rocket. According to Sportsnet's Eric Engels, the Canadiens management group will be meeting with Perreault on Thursday to discuss the future.

"Mathieu Perreault, who cleared waivers today, will meet with Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton to discuss future plans. Not yet clear if he'll be sent to @RocketLaval, Canadiens say. I would add it's possible he gets traded now that he has cleared waivers," Engels said.

Perreault, a native of Drummondville (Quebec), hasn't had the homecoming he'd expected after signing a one-year contract with the Canadiens last summer. He's only appeared in 18 games with Montreal due to having a procedure done on his eye, as well as finding himself in the press box as a healthy scratch as of late.

In those 18 games, Perreault has five points (three goals, two assists), four penalty minutes, and is a plus-one. All three of his goals came in one game, back in October against the Detroit Red Wings.

As Eric Engels mentions in his tweet, it's possible that Perreault gets traded now. Perreault would be a good fit on any contending team looking to add some depth to their forward group and leadership to their locker room.
