On Thursday, Ottawa Senators head coach D.J. Smith announced that defenceman Thomas Chabot will miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season after suffering a fracture in his hand on Wednesday night against Columbus.

The injury happened during the second period of last night's 4-1 loss. Chabot was hit along the boards by Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly. The Sainte-Marie (Quebec) native left the game and did not return.

Chabot, 25, appeared in 55 games this season for the Senators. In those 55 games, he led all of Ottawa's d-core in assists (28), goals (6), and points (34) while adding 26 penalty minutes, and was a minus-one.

This is a big loss for the Senators. Although they aren't making a push for the playoffs, losing the pillar of your d-core, as well as a member of your leadership group is always tough. D.J. Smith will now have to rely more on guys like Nikita Zaitsev and Nick Holden, while giving an opportunity to Erik Brannstrom, who will look to prove he belongs in the NHL down the stretch. There's also a good chance that the Sens call up Michael Del Zotto from Belleville (AHL).
