On Tuesday night, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman indicated that the Toronto Maple Leafs may place Jake Muzzin on the long-term injured reserve (LTIR) and it appears he was correct.

According to PuckPedia, the Leafs have called up Brennan Menell and Kristian Rubins, while Rasmus Sandin has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies. While nothing is official yet, the team is soon expected to place Muzzin on LTIR, which will free up $5.62 million in cap space. Had the additional moves above not taken place, they would have had $5.41 million to work with after placing Muzzin on the LTIR.

Many fans have grown frustrated with the NHL's non salary cap in the playoffs, as it allows for situations like this to occur. For example, last season the Tampa Bay Lightning kept Nikita Kucherov on the LTIR until the start of playoffs, and then were able to activate him despite the fact they were well over the cap limit. Many believe the Vegas Golden Knights are currently doing the same with Mark Stone in order to make room for Jack Eichel.

In defence of the Leafs, this situation appears different as Muzzin is dealing with a head injury, but you can expect to hear many complaints if the Leafs take advantage of this cap situation and then activate Muzzin for the playoffs.
