Arguably the biggest move of the 2022 NHL off-season was the move to send Matthew Tkachuk to Florida with Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar off to Calgary, and at this point, it looks like a one-sided deal.

A career year for Chucky

Despite playing three less games than he did the year before, Tkachuk managed a career high in points with 40 goals and 69 assists for 109 points, and was instrumental in leading Florida all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

All of this made his eight-year, $76 million deal seem like a steal, and now, The Athletic have agreed on that, as they named Tkachuk as having the best contract in the NHL right now.

Can he improve on that?

After a fantastic start to his career with the Flames, Tkachuk took it to another level on both ends of the ice in 2022-23, and had one of, if not the best five-on-five seasons in hockey analytics history.

While $9.5 million AAV is no cheap deal, if he can continue to elevate his play and the play of those around him, while becoming one of the top-five players in hockey, The Athletic may have got it right, especially with others such as McDavid, MacKinnon and soon to be Matthews all earning well over $10 million a season.
