It seems the International Olympic Committee is doing everything it can to ensure a gold medal is awarded during the Men's and Women's hockey tournaments at the 2022 Winter Olympics. In fact, there may even be two for each.

According to new rules published on the IOC's website, if teams cannot put together a complete roster once the tournaments are down to the final four, the Games will award gold medals to both teams that made the final, while bronze medals will be given to both teams that made the game to decide third place.

If the number of positive tests exceeds the allowable standards for one of the finalists, that team will be replaced by the winner of the match for the bronze medal.

Obviously this is not the way any of the teams competing would prefer to end the tournament. However, it is for the best to put these rules in place now rather than waiting until the tournaments are down to the final four teams.
