It's far from scientific, but a survey of fans by hockey analytics site EPR Hockey gives some interesting insight into players that fans perceive as exceeding expectations, or failing to meet them. EPR Hockey asked fans to name those they see as being the most underrated and overrated players in the categories of forwards, defencemen and goalies. Around 900 people voted. Here are the results in the underrated category:

The top pick is each category there is solid. Jake Guentzel was a point-per-game player last season, and is looking even better this year with 35 points (18G, 17A) in 30 games. Devon Toews is on pace to exceed previous highs in goals, points and assists this season, and should beat them by a lot if he can stay hot. Does he benefit from playing with a good team like the Avalanche? Juuse Saros should go well past his career high 40 games with the Nashville Predators. He has a current save percentage of .927, a goals against average of 2.30, and a record of 20-10-1.

Here what we have in the overrated category for each position:

Mitch Marner will have to put up some pretty hefty numbers for fans outside of Toronto to consider his salary justified. There is also the talk about his lack of production on the powerplay and his coach's decision to leave him there despite his low numbers. Seth Jones of the Chicago Blackhawks was certainly a controversial signing. He had a slow start in Chicago in 2021-22 but has looked better lately. Carey Price will always be brought up by fans outside of Montreal for making that much money and his current age.
