The Montreal Canadiens began their general manager search just after New Year's Day and it appears that they are already closing in on a final decision according to Sportsnet's Eric Engels.

Engels is reporting that the Canadiens will likely make a final decision in the coming days and that it's down to three candidates, two of whom are Danny Briere and Mathieu Darche.

"Believe Habs GM search could be resolved in the coming days. Told it's down to three candidates, and believe Daniel Briere and Mathieu Darche are two of them. Also expect a couple of others who were interviewed to possibly land jobs with the club," Engels said in a tweet on Friday afternoon.

Briere, 44, is currently working in the Philadelphia Flyers organization as the general manager of their ECHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners. He spent one season with the Canadiens, in 2013-14, playing a key role in helping them get to the Eastern Conference Final.

Darche, 45, is working with the Tampa Bay Lightning as their director of hockey operations, a role he took on in May of 2019. Since then, the Lightning have gone on to win back-to-back Stanley Cups. He spent the final three seasons of his career with the Canadiens, tallying 48 points in 149 games.
