According to Samantha Pell of The Washington Post, the Capitals have placed veteran forwards Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie on injured reserve retroactive to last weekend.

Both Backstrom and Oshie have been dealing with a non-COVID illness and haven't played since December 31st. The pair practiced with the team on Thursday but didn't travel with the Caps for their two-game road trip in St. Louis tonight and Minnesota on Saturday night. Per the NHL's retroactive rules of injured reserve, they were eligible to return to the lineup, but that won't be the case Pell mentioned.

The Capitals also announced that they've placed defenceman Michal Kempny on the team's taxi squad and have removed Dennis Cholowski and Martin Fehervary from COVID protocol, adding them to the active roster.

In other news, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Friday that they've placed star forward Mitch Marner along with Pierre Engvall in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol.

Marner, 24, has played in 26 games this season where he's tallied twenty-one points (six goals, fifteen assists), four penalty minutes and is a plus-five.

In a corresponding move, the Maple Leafs announced that they've called up forwards Joey Anderson and Brett Seney from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League and have assigned them to the taxi squad.
