A man described as a tireless advocate for minor hockey has been killed in an almost unbelievable accident. Mike Sharp, who spent 12 years with the West Vancouver Minor Hockey Association, retiring as president in 2015, was killed along with his wife when a tree fell onto their home in Horseshoe Bay Saturday night.

"He had a deep love for the game of hockey and was selfless with his time and a true gentleman," said Tom Oberti, current president of the WVMHA.

"The minor hockey community is close-knit and driven by volunteers like Mike, and his passing has touched many of us deeply."

Police noted that gas lines had been ruptured as a result of the uprooted tree, while BC Hydro power lines in the vicinity had been knocked down.

"This appears to be a tragic accident," said Const. Kevin Goodmurphy with the West Vancouver Police.

A friend noted that Sharp was a beer league hockey goalie for over two decades.

"Mike was the heart and soul of the dressing room, always ready with a smile and story from his and Caroline's travels around the world," said Patrick Hogan.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mike and Caroline Sharp.
