After an attempted comeback following two knee surgeries, goaltender Ben Bishop announced his retirement from the National Hockey League on Tuesday.

During his press conference on Tuesday, Bishop took time to thank all of those who have gotten him to this point in his career.

In March 2020, he had surgery on his knee and in the time between then and now, Bishop has only played one game, and that came during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs against Colorado.

Bishop then needed to have a second, more complex surgery on his knee with led to him missing the entire 2020-21 season and to start this season, the Stars placed him on long-term injured reserve.

The Stars assigned Bishop to their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars for a conditioning stint last week. In that appearance with Texas, Bishop allowed eight goals on 34 shots.

One day after that appearance in the AHL, Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill announced that Bishop's playing career was over. The Stars called up him from the AHL and subsequently placed him on long-term injured reserve. He'll remain on LTIR until the end of his contract in July 2023.

Bishop, a native of Denver, Colorado, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. In 413 career games for St. Louis, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, and Dallas, Bishop had a record of 222-128-36, with a 2.32 G.A.A., a .921 save percentage, and 33 shutouts.

Congratulations to Ben on a great career, and all the best in retirement.
