With the Holidays just around the corner, the NHL is likely hoping it can make it there before COVID numbers get too high. However, based on the names that hit the protocol list Tuesday, it's not looking good.

The New York Islanders have announced Mat Barzal is now in COVID protocol and won't play Tuesday night.

Devon Toews of Colorado is also on the list. Defenceman Justin Barron has been called up from the AHL to take his spot.

Washington will have to do without Garnet Hathaway for a bit.

Meanwhile, The Boston Bruins have placed both Brad Marchand and Craig Smith into protocol.

The Vancouver Canucks, who already dealt with an outbreak last season, have placed defenceman Luke Schenn and forward Juho Lammikko on the list.

The Edmonton Oilers have added forward Ryan McLeod to COVID protocol.

The league had already postponed three Calgary Flames games due to an outbreak, with more positive tests announced elsewhere. There is concern the NHL is headed for another temporary shutdown, although it will almost certainly do all it can to avoid that. As for NHLers playing at the Winter Olympics in February, that looks like less of a possibility with each passing day.
