According to Andrew Zadarnowski of TSN690, the KHL is in negotiations with the National Hockey League about the potential of exhibition games in Russia in September 2022. The NHL teams likely to participate are the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"The KHL is negotiating with the NHL to host the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning in Russia for a couple of exhibition games against their teams. They are targeting September of 2022, and obviously Ovechkin and Kucherov are the big draws," Zadarnowski said in a tweet.

Discussions between the two leagues have been going on since at least August, when KHL president Alexei Morozov said that he planned on meeting with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly in October.

"We are in correspondence with the NHL's deputy commissioner Bill Daly. Right now both leagues are preparing for the start of their seasons, and they still have questions about the Olympics. But the reaction is positive and in mid-October we're planning to discuss this further," Morozov said.

The last time the KHL and NHL held exhibition games was back in 2010 when the Carolina Hurricanes faced off against SKA St. Petersburg and the Phoenix Coyotes took on Dinamo Riga.
