Few people know the city of Montreal or the Montreal Canadiens better than Guy Lafleur. The Hockey Hall-of-Famer won five Stanley Cups and played 15 seasons with the team and is considered one of the best to ever play the sport. It stands to reason that Lefleur has some opinions on what went wrong with former GM Marc Bergevin in Montreal and who should replace him. He shared those in a recent interview with Le Journal de Montréal.

Lafleur made it very clear that there's only one candidate capable of righting the ship for the Canadiens after the departure of Bergevin, and that is Patrick Roy.

"I don't know the other candidates whose names are mentioned in the media," he said. "On the other hand, I do not see any people other than Patrick to deal with the situation which prevails with the Canadiens."

"Give him the chance!," he continued.

"Give him a one-year contract if necessary. They can fire him if it doesn't work."

As for what went wrong with Bergevin, Lafleur said he firmly believes NHL GMs shouldn't last too long anywhere.

"In any case, the contracts of the general managers are too long. It should take three years to build and three years to win," said Lafleur.

«Ten years is a long time in crime!," he added, referring to Bergevin's tenure in Montreal.

While there's really no way of knowing for sure, Roy seems to be at least one of the candidates the Canadiens are looking at while searching for a new GM. According to some reports, he's high up on the list. Whether he can get the job done is a matter of opinion, but it should be anything but boring if he ends up being the team's next GM.
