Evander Kane's tenure in the National Hockey League has been mired in controversy, but what has occurred over the last two seasons has really elevated the amount negative attention that he and, by proxy, the San Jose Sharks have garnered.

The latest bit of controversy surrounds Kane and his estranged wife, Anna - with Anna claiming that Kane has gambled on NHL games, is an absentee father and abandoned her and their child in the midst of a bankruptcy claim by Kane - and also with Kane claiming that his wife faked a pregnancy.

It should go without saying that if the San Jose Sharks could find a suitor, as unlikely as it seems, they would be eager to offload Kane and the circus that comes with him.

On Tuesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Sharks have indeed been floating Kane's name out there, and they are now willing to do what they were hesitant to do this summer.. retain salary.

"(Evander) Kane on his contract has a 3-team trade list, I don't know who's going to trade for him right now but one of the things that I have heard is that the Sharks have let it be known that if somebody is interested they would retain," said Friedman.

I can't imagine that this contract will be an easy one to move, but one thing is for certain.. if the Sharks do indeed want to ship out Evander Kane, it is abundantly clear that 50% of his $7M AAV will remain with the Sharks for the next 3 seasons - unless they can find another team to enter into the mix for a price that is willing to help them out with a double retention-type of a deal.
