The Pittsburgh Penguins franchise purchase by the Fenway Sports Group is one step closer to becoming an official transaction.
The FSG board, along with the Penguins board, have approved the sale of the team. The board of the National Hockey League still has to vote, so they are still awaiting the final approval from the NHL.
Mario Lemieux will still remain a minority owner with the purchase of the franchise, but the approval by both boards is a major step in the acquisition. It does not mean that it is final, but it is much closer to happening.
FSG has the potential to bring even more money to the franchise as a very successful group. They are headed by billionaire John Henry, and the group owns the Boston Red Sox, the Liverpool soccer team of the English Premier League, Roush Fenway Racing of NASCAR, and 80% of the New England Sports Network.
