If you haven't heard the news yet, former 2nd overall pick Jack Eichel is now a member of the Vegas Golden Knights following a late night/early morning trade with the Buffalo Sabres. While details have been slow to trickle in, we can now confirm the entire haul that the Sabres are getting in return.

First off, Buffalo is sending a third round pick to Vegas along with Eichel as part of the trade. The return for the Sabres is prospect Peyton Krebs, forward Alex Tuch, a 2022 first-round draft pick and a 2023 third-rounder.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, no salary is being retained by Buffalo. That means the Knights will have to clear some additional cap space before the trade can be officially completed. There's some speculation that will come with moving Mark Stone to long-term injured reserve. Dreger also reports that the first round pick Vegas sent to Buffalo is top 10 protected. That means that if the Golden Knights get a top 10 pick in 2022, they can choose to keep it get and the first round pick to Buffalo moves to 2023.

With Tuch moving to Buffalo, Vegas now has just six players that were on the team in 2017, the Golden Knights' first year in the NHL. They include William Karlsson, Jonathan Marchessault, Reilly Smith, and William Carrier for forwards, as well as Shea Theodore and Brayden McNabb on the blueline.

Tuch has not played this season after undergoing shoulder surgery in late July. He was given a six-month timeline for recovery after the operation. The 25-year-old, who is signed at a cap hit of $4.75 through the 2025-26 season, had 18 goals and 33 points in 55 games last season.

Krebs, 20, is without a point in nine games with the Golden Knights this season. He was selected 17th overall by Vegas in the 2019 NHL Draft. He had one assist in four games with the Golden Knights last season, posting one goal and five points in five AHL games with the Henderson Silver Knights, and 13 goals and 43 points in 24 WHL games with the Winnipeg Ice.

There seems to be some chatter online that Vegas is the big winner in this trade. I think there was still some apprehension from teams that Eichel may not be the same player once he returns from his disc replacement surgery. That, of course, remains to be seen. According to several reports, Eichel will likely be getting the surgery ASAP once the trade is completed, and will need three to four months before he'll be cleared to play.
