Following Saturday's blowout win over the Detroit Red Wings, Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme gave an update on defenceman Joel Edmundson.

Edmundson has been out with an undisclosed injury since the beginning of training camp in September and he left the team last week to be with his father who is battling cancer.

Ducharme said that Edmundson has returned to Montreal, but won't be joining the team on their upcoming West Coast road trip.

"Dom Ducharme says Joel Edmundson is back in MTL. Won't go on the road trip, but the feeling is that he'll be back at practice with the team and be able to play soon after upon the Canadiens' return from out west," Sportsnet's Eric Engels said.

Edmundson, 28, had a strong first year in Montreal during the 2020-21 campaign. He finished fifth in the NHL for +/- (+28) and added 13 points (3 G, 10 A), along with 25 penalty minutes.

Montreal's first home game after their West Coast swing is on Tuesday, November 2nd when they take on the Detroit Red Wings. There's a good chance Edmundson will return for that game and bring a bit more stability to the Canadiens D-core.
