The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has decided to suspend Nicolas Daigle and Massimo Siciliano of the Victoriaville Tigres indefinitely, as the two are dealing with allegations of sexual assault from an incident that occurred on June 6.

The QMJHL made it clear that they take these charges very seriously and don't condone violent sexual behaviour of any sort. They also let it be known they sympathize with any and all victims of physical and sexual assault and stand by their zero-tolerance policy in that regard. While some were quite upset the league took a long time to act on this, they explained why today.

They mentioned a few key elements that were considered before acting, one of which was that their players have the status of amateur student athletes, and are not employees. They also mentioned that QMJHL athletes are students attending schools. They said that the players must be allowed to continue their education despite this suspension. Another was that the players will live with their billet families in host cities, and the players will stay on the QMJHL Players Help Program.

This is obviously a very serious issue, and while it was very frustrating to some that the league took this long to act, the important thing is that they did, and the ruling they made was the correct one. Things like this need to stop happening, and hopefully punishments like these will help in that regard.
