More bad news for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who will be without the services of star winger Jake Guentzel for the immediate future after the 26-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

In a related story, the Pens also had depth forward Zach Aston-Reese test positive for the virus last week.

The possibility that Guentzel's test results have yielded a false positive is there, but given the fact that the two cases have been announced in relatively close proximity, it is a pretty good indicator that it is not a false positive, nor is it merely a coincidence.

The Pens are also without the services of their two top players as offseason surgeries have rendered both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin inactive for training camp and the preseason.

At this point, Crosby is expected to miss the first week of the season, while Malkin is still presumed to be a couple of months away.

Guentzel appeared in all 56 games for the Penguins last season, amassing 57 points in 56 games.

If Guentzel is indeed positive for the virus, he is likely to miss the season opener for the Pens on October 12th as they take on the defending champs, the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Bolts' home barn, Amalie Arena.
