Edmonton Oilers defenseman Duncan Keith will be a big part of the Oilers' blueline this season. However, in order to play, Keith needed to receive his COVID-19 vaccine - something he says he wasn't too pleased about.

We are now closing in on two full years into this global pandemic, with vaccines proving to be a useful tool in not only helping to limit the spread of the virus, but also in reducing the severity of the symptoms in those who have become infected and reducing the number of individuals who might have otherwise required urgent medical attention.

Keith told the media on Friday that one of the biggest determining factors for himself in the decision to receive the vaccine is the way travel is being regulated.

He also harbors a bit of frustration towards the NHLPA, who he feels should have pushed the issue of player's body, player's choice.

It's difficult to fault the NHL and it's franchises from wanting vaccines to be mandatory, given the impact that COVID-19 outbreaks had on the 2020-21 season.

Regardless of how an individual feels about the vaccine and how they view the NHL's big push for a 100% inoculation rate, I think it's important for people to recognize that playing hockey is not a human right, but a privilege - and if a player elects to exercise his right to choose, there are consequences that go along with that.
