Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill announced to media on Thursday that forward Jakub Vrana is expected to miss at least four months as he is set to undergo shoulder surgery.

Vrana, 25, was acquired from the Washington Capitals in a blockbuster trade last season alongside Richard Panik, a 2021 first-round pick and a 2022 second round selection in exchange for Anthony Mantha. Many questioned the price the Capitals paid to acquire Mantha's services at the time of the deal, and Vrana certainly helped prove that case true as he put up eight goals and 11 points in just 11 games with the Red Wings last season.

Thanks in large part to his great stint with the Red Wings last season, Vrana was able to sign a new three-year, $15.75 million deal this offseason. This is a huge loss, as he was expected to be one of the biggest contributors on a team that doesn't possess a ton of offensive talent. It could be another long year for this team and its fans.
